Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

The brewery was described in a Ballarat Star article on Ballarat breweries in 1870:

The Albion Brewery Company’s premises are in Errard street, near the site of the old Soho Foundry. This used to be the Galatea Brewery. The cellar here is very clean and dry, and holds 70 hhds. The two fermenting tuns hold 2000 gallons each, and the liquor is cooled by one of Robinson’s patent refrigerators. The boiling vat holds 3000 gallons, and the boiling is all done with steam. 80 bushels of malt can be mashed here at a time. The sugar at this brewery is boiled separately in a small wooden boiler by steam. The malt-crusher will crush 30 bushels per hour.[1]
