Alexander Daniel Dangerfield was a publican in the Ballarat district, <1859-1867>.

History[edit | edit source]

Dangerfield was born in 1813, the son of Julius Dangerfield.[1]

Dangerfield was granted the license of the London Tavern, in Bridge Street, Ballarat, in June 1858.[2] It was renewed in 1859.[3]

In January 1861, he was fined 5s and costs for being open on Christmas Day.[4]

His daughter died in March 1862:

On 26th March, of diptheria, Elizabeth Jessie, the well beloved eldest daughter of Alexander Dangerfield, 44 Bridge street, aged one year and nine months.[5]

Dangerfield was granted the license for the Sportsmans' Arms at Learmonth in August 1862. The license was revoked in October 1862 after his failure to pay the license fee, and the court believing that he was not a fit person to hold the license:

Alexander Daniel Dangerfield applied for a district publican's license for the Sportsman's Arms Hotel, Learmonth. (A certificate for a license for this house had been granted to the present applicant on the 25th August last, but he having failed to pay his license fee into the Treasury within the proper period, had been obliged to file a fresh application). The Chairman informed the applicant that the bench was unanimous in refusing his application as they did not consider him a fit person to hold a license. Mr Dangerfield requested that the bench would inform him of their reason for adopting such a course. The Chairman said the bench declined assigning any reason for the course adopted, but that he thought the applicant must be as well aware as the bench was of circumstances which had recently acquired publicity, and which rendered such a course a matter of duty on the part of the magistrates.[6]

Dangerfield made an attempt to have this decision reversed a few weeks later:

Alexander Daniel Dangerfield applied for a district publican's license for the Sportman's Arms Hotel, at Learmonth. The applicant said he was not prepared to proceed with his application in the absence of witnesses and requested a postponement for one week. The Bench said that the matter could not be decided unless those magistrates who had so lately refused the applicant a license were present, and that under all the circumstances of this case the hearing of the application must be postponed till the 10th November next.[7]

His attempt to regain his license was successful, and by May 1863 he was able to gain a temporary extension to his trading hours:

Mr A. D. Dangerfield, of the Sportsman's Arms Hotel, Learmonth, applied for an extension of his license on the evening of the performance of Burton's Circus near his house. The application was granted.[8]

In June 1864 Dangerfield had the license for the City Hotel in Lydiard Street, Ballarat, a nine roomed brick building.[9] He transferred the license to William Bannister in January 1867.[10]

Dangerfield died in Ballarat in 1899.[1]
