History[edit | edit source]

Lester had the license for the Free Trade Hotel in 1855.[1]

His son, Alfred, died at the hotel on 3 April 1857:

In June 1857 and 1858 his license for the hotel was renewed.[3][4]

Lester had the license for Lester's Hotel in Sturt Street, Ballarat, from at least June 1862 to July 1892.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

In June 1868 the Ballarat District Orphan Asylum made him a Life Governor:

The secretary stated that he had received £10 10s from Mr Alfred Lester as a donation for a life-governorship of the institution[11]

In July 1885 a man was charged with giving Lester bad cheques:

John Barrymore was sentenced to four months' imprisonment, the first four days of the third and fourth months to be spent in solitary confinement, for passing valueless cheques to Alfred Lester, of Lester's Hotel.[9]

In July 1892 the license for Lester's Hotel was transferred from Alfred Lester to Mary Lester.[10]

Lester died in Melbourne in May 1900:

LESTER.— At his late residence, "Ontario," Power street, Hawthorn, Alfred Lester, late of Ballarat, in his 81st year.[12]
