In September 1887 Smith took over the Royal Hotel in Doveton Street, following the death of his father-in-law:

The executors of the late Edward Larkins, deceased, applied to have his son-in-law, Alfred Smith, appointed as an agent to carry on the business until the expiration of the license.[1]

Smith is listed on the 1924 Electoral Roll as a publican living in Doveton Street, Ballarat.[2]
