Background[edit | edit source]
History[edit | edit source]
In September 1855 the Creswick and Ballarat Royal Mail Line coaches ran a daily service from the hotel to Bath's Hotel and the George Hotel in Ballarat.[2]
In December 1856 the hotel had a booth at the Ballarat races:
Mr Anthony, of Creswick, also had a booth, which possessed the advantage of having a balcony connected with it, so that it answered the purpose of a second grandstand. Mr Anthony's was a very handsome tent, and on either corner of it the English and American flags floated. Mr Anthony also provided those who might think fit to patronise him, with music, having some German minstrels who performed various airs during the day, accompanying the performance by singing. [3]
The hotel was described in the license application of June 1864:
TO the Bench of Magistrates, Creswick.- I, THOMAS WILLIAM ANTHONY, Publican, now residing at Albert street, in the town of Creswick, do hereby give notice that it is my intention to apply to the Justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at Creswick, on the 1st day of July, 1864, for a certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License for a house situated at Albert street, Creswick, containing twenty-four bed rooms and eight sitting-rooms, in my own occupation and possession, and now licensed under the sign of the American Hotel. 15th day of June, 1864. THOS. W. ANTHONY.[4]
In 1861 the hotel was granted a night license.[5]
In June 1884 the hotel stables were destroyed by fire:
SERIOUS FIRE IN CRESWICK. The following telegram was received from our Creswick correspondent yesterday morning, but at too advanced an hour to be in time for publication:—“The stables at the rear of the American hotel, were destroyed by fire at 3 o'clock this morning. They were in occupation of Mr Tighe, coach proprietor. Eight horses were burnt, in addition to valuable harness. Fortunately no wind was blowing at the time, or the conflagration would have been most disastrous, as there are a number of wooden buildings in the vicinity.” Our local correspondent last evening gives further particulars as follow;— "Mr Tighe’s loss will be a serious one. He had his horses, harness, and coaches insured for the sum of £300, and the insurance expired on Saturday afternoon. A renewal had not been sought for, as contract for carrying the mails was to expire at the end of this month. Several of the neighbours were awakened by the kicking and neighing of the horses, but did not get up to see the cause. Some Chinamen living at the rear were the first to notice the fire.”[6]
