The hotel was described in the Weekly Miner, 8 August 1856, as being in Magpie Gully.[1]

Auction notice for the hotel, May 1857

The hotel was offered for sale in May 1857:

THE DAY. Sale by Auction of A Hotel, Furniture, Stable, &c, J. AND T. ODDIE have received instructious to sell by auction, on Friday next, May the 29th, on the ground, The American Hotel, situate at Magpie, and fronting the main line of road through that important mining district. THE HOTEL IS A FINE TWO-STOREY BUILDING, with a frontage of forty feet; contains a large and spacious bar, elegantly fitted up; two sitting-rooms, six bed-rooms, and a large store room. In the rear is a commodious kitchen, a six-stall stable, and other outbuildings. The Furniture comprises a French bagatelle table, superior mahogany sofa and centre table, gilt frame looking-glasses, oil paintings. chairs, tables, bedding, &c, &c. In the kitchen is a leviathan cooking-stove, and every description of culinary utensils. Terms - Cash.[2]
