In 1860 the hotel was offered for sale:

The hotel was mentioned in the Argus, 1889, after a fatal accident:
"John Evans, a miner, aged 62, accidentally fell over the balustrade in the American Hotel, Ballarat East, last night, a distance of 20ft. He did not appear seriously hurt at first, and this morning he got up. A few hours afterwards, however, he suddenly fell dead."[4]
It was one of the 26 hotels closed in 1892 in Ballarat as part of the changes to licensing laws.[5] The owners were paid £545 compensation for the closure of the business.[5]
