History[edit | edit source]

Ann Adams had previously run the Old House at Home Hotel in Geelong with her husband. When she left him he advertised that he would no longer be responsible for her debts.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, That I will not be responsible for any debts which may be contracted by my wife, Ann Adams, now mistress of the famed Golden Age Hotel, Main road, Ballarat, who left her home in Geelong without any provocation. GEORGE ADAMS, Old House at Home, Corio Street, Geelong. Geelong, 30th May, 1860.[1]

In May 1860 she was granted the license of the hotel (named spelled as Agnes).[2]

In December 1860, Adams was in court for breaches of the licensing laws:

Police v Adams, for having the Golden Age Hotel open at illegal hours, and permitting card playing at the same time. Sergeant Larner said there was a very low gang of persons there card playing, and the house was a receptacle for thieves and robbers, and he hoped the Bench would cancel the license as defendant was not fit to conduct a public-house. The interior of the house was extremely filthy. The defendant said she was surprised that the Sergeant had such an animosity to her, and she was well respected among the working men, and had kept a boarding-house for many years, and a house could not be disorderly unless women were there. The Bench informed Mrs Adams that her license was in danger. She had been fined a few weeks ago, and now she would have to pay another penalty of 40s, and if she came there again she would find that her license would be cancelled. Defendant- I hope not, your honors. The Sergeant is laughing. You need not laugh Sergeant, you have a down on me.[3]
