The Argyle Hotel was a hotel in Argyle, Victoria, <1872-1882.

Background[edit | edit source]

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was at Argyle, about 2.6kms south of Linton. The address in 1872 was given as Pitfield Road.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

There was an incident at the hotel in September 1874:

Our Smythesdale correspondent writes: "I hear that Mr T. Trevarrow, a publican at Linton, was at the Argyle hotel in that locality, and that he had a horse and cart or dray with him. While there it seems Mr Trevarrow commenced wrestling or fighting with a man named Henry Parker, and ended with breaking the man’s leg. It appears, then, that some bystander, enraged at what Trevarrow had done, pitched into him, and during this time the horse bolted and smashed the cart to pieces. Parker, whose leg was broken, was taken into the Ballarat Hospital on Monday night." We learn that Parker is in a bad way at present.[2]

While a man named Parker was in at Trevarrow's Argyle Hotel, Linton, last night, he accused the landlord of cheating a man he was throwing dice with, on account of which Trevarrow assaulted him, and kicking him broke the tibia and fibula of his leg. He was received into the hospital here this morning in a very low state.[3]

SIR, —In reference to a paragraph in yesterday’s Star relating to an accident that occurred at the Argyle hotel, Linton, I beg to state that it is grossly misrepresented. The two men were quite friendly, and the dispute arose about the throw of the dice; they closed, and in the struggle Parker threw Trevarrow and fell on him, but Parker’s leg being underneath was the cause of it being broken. As soon as Trevarrow knew it he shook hands with him. There was no malice on either side. By inserting the above you will greatly oblige, your &c., CONRAD ZILLIS, Argyle Hotel, Linton, 30th September 1874.[4]

In August 1879, the publican Conrad Zilles asked the Grenvilleshire for a footpath to be built to the hotel:

From Conrad Zilles and others, asking to have the footpath formed from Mr Morey's gate to the Argyle hotel. Cr M'Fadzean supported the prayer of the petition, and moved that the work be undertaken, and the engineer to report on the cost. Cr Kopke seconded. Carried.[5]

In February 1882 the Argyle Hotel was burnt down:

A serious fire took place about, eight ' o'clock on Monday night at Argyles, near Linton, by which Conrad Zilles's Argyles Hotel, situated on the Linton and Happy Valley road, was burnt to the ground. So quick was the spread of the elements that little or nothing was saved.[6]

Inquests[edit | edit source]

  • March 1873 on Charles Lewis:

An inquest was held by Mr Hopper, district coroner, on the body of Charles Lewis, late of Skipton, at the Argyle hotel, near Linton, on the 22nd inst. Dr Hoskins made the post-mortem examination, and in accordance with his evidence the jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased died on the 20 th inst. from congestion of the lungs, accelerated by drink.[7]
