The hotel was offered for sale in September 1869:
PRELIMINARY NOTICE. JAMES EDWARDS has been favored with instructions from the trustees in the estate of Mr M'Murchy to SELL by AUCTION on an early date— The whole of that very valuable block of buildings, known as the ARGYLE HOTEL, CLUNES BAKERY, HAIR-DRESSER'S SHOP, And Stock-in-Trade, &c., Situate in Fraser street, Clunes. Further particulars in future issue.[1]
