The Australian Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1863-1909>.

The Australian Hotel was on the corner of Peel Street,[1] and Wills Street (later renamed as Mair Street).[2][3]
Background[edit | edit source]
The hotel later became the Athletic Club Hotel.[3]
History[edit | edit source]
In June 1864, Elijah Cocking advertised his intention to apply for the license:
TO the Bench of Magistrates at Ballarat East.-I, ELIJAH COCKING, Licensed Publican, now residing at Ballarat East in the borough of Ballarat East, do hereby give you notice, that it is my intention to apply to the justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at Ballarat. East on the 1st day of July, for a Certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License for a house situate in Wills street, Ballarat East, containing seven bedrooms, five sitting-rooms, bar and stables, and at present licensed as the Australian Hotel, in the name of the said Elijah Cocking. Dated this 16th day of June, 1864. at Ballarat East. E. COCKING.[4]

- In June 1863 the publican was William Stillman.[1]
- In July 1864 the license was granted to Elijah Cocking.[5]
- In February 1909 the publican's license was transferred from Thomas Rees to Thomas Smith[7]
