History

In June 1864, Elijah Cocking advertised his intention to apply for the license:

TO the Bench of Magistrates at Ballarat East.-I, ELIJAH COCKING, Licensed Publican, now residing at Ballarat East in the borough of Ballarat East, do hereby give you notice, that it is my intention to apply to the justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at Ballarat. East on the 1st day of July, for a Certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License for a house situate in Wills street, Ballarat East, containing seven bedrooms, five sitting-rooms, bar and stables, and at present licensed as the Australian Hotel, in the name of the said Elijah Cocking. Dated this 16th day of June, 1864. at Ballarat East. E. COCKING.
