The Ballaguy Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1855-1857> It may be sometimes referred to as the Ballinguiy Hotel.

Background

This Hotel was named after its owned Jean-Marie Ballaguy/Ballinguiy. The hotel changed hands on 20 September 1856, with E. J. Croft the licensee until 24 July 1857 when the hotel appears to have been either sold or ceased to exist.

In September 1855 the hotel was offered for sale:

HOTEL for Sale.-The Proprietor of Ballaguy Hotel, at Black Hill, Ballaarat, wishing to leave for Europe, will Sell his Establishment by Private Contract. The nett proceeds are from £1200 to £1500 sterling per annum. For further particulars apply to the Proprietor as above. 3268 oct 8

In April 1857 the hotel was for sale:

SPLENDID INVESTMENT. For Sale by Private Contract, THAT old and well established House, known as the BALLAGUY HOTEL, BLACK HILL FLAT. The above is doing a good steady business. The only reason the present proprietor has in leaving it is on account of his having a farm at the Bald Hills, which requires his personal superintendence. Terms-Liberal. For particulars, apply to the proprietor, on the premises ; or to M'NAUGHT, BOYD & CO., Armstrong-street, Ballarat.

On 25 July 1857 Frederick J. Croft was reported to have applied for a license for the hotel. The application was held over until 31 July, but only one of the five applications scheduled to appear before the Licensing Bench appeared on 31 July, and it was not Croft.

History

At times the mining of gold at Black Hill took place near the Ballaguy Hotel:

Black Hill Rush.— A rush has taken place to some shallow ground near the Ballaguy Hotel, at the front of the Black Hill. Some of the claims have turned out remarkably well, sufficiently so to induce some of the fortunate occupants to remain by them all night to prevent any of their less scrupulous neighbor from taking—what our Clunes correspondent would call—a few tubs of stuff for a subsistence. Community Involvement

The Ballaguy Hotel was used for the first meeting of the Black Hill Flat Gold Mining Company.

Black Hill Flat Gold Mining Company.

THE Manager and Trustees of the above named Company will be in attendance on Thursday and Friday, the 4th and 5th of December at Mr Ogier's, barrister, Main-road, opposite the Camp, to issue shares. It is requested that all those who have given in their names as intended shareholders should take up their shares on those days, or they will be otherwise disposed of as the Company must be made up by Saturday, the 6th instant, when the first meeting will be held at the Ballaguy Hotel, on the Black Hill Flat, at four o'clock p.m.

A French Lodge of the Freemasons, Rameau d'or d'Eleusis, was established at a meeting of the Ballinguiy Hotel, Black Hill in 1853. The Lodge held a regular meeting and banquet at the Hotel around 23 March 1856. The lodge was deemed 'irregular' with most of its members becoming members of the Ballarat Lodge No. 717 E.C. which was founded in mid-1857.
