The Ballarat Hotel was a hotel in Barry's Reef, Victoria, <1874-1897>.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in Barry's Reef, a small mining community 2kms north of Blackwood.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel was originally the Robin Hood Hotel, built by the Sherwood family in the 1850s.[1]

In December 1887, Richard Goodge advertised his intention to renew his license:

Notice of Application for Renewal of a Victualler's License. I, RICHARD GOODGE, of Barry's Reef, Blackwood, in the Colony of Victoria, the holder of a VICTUALLER'S LICENSE for "The Ballarat Hotel," at Barry's Reef aforesaid, do hereby give notice that I desire to obtain and will at the sitting of the Licensing Court for the Licensing Districts of Ballan North, South Ballan, Egerton, and Blackwood, to be holden at Ballan, on the 23rd day of December, 1887, apply for a Certificate authorising the renewal of my said license. Dated the Thirtieth day of November, One thousand Eight hundred and Eighty-seven.[2]

In 1897 it was known as Goodge's Ballarat Hotel.[1]

It was closed by the License Reduction Board in 1913. The owner received £175 compensation; licensee, no claim.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

In September 1881, the publican, James Millyard, successfully sued a customer, James Neville, £2 10s, the cost of board and refreshments.[4]

In March 1889, the new librarian of the Barry's Reef Mechanic's Institute died on his was home from the hotel:

THE awfully sudden death of Mr. William Edwin Vinson, at Barry's Reef on the 14th inst. ....The enquiry was held by Mr Ferguson, J.P. From the evidence it appeared that deceased had lately received the appointment of caretaker and librarian of the Barry's Reef Mechanics' Institute and not being at the Institute on Thursday, Mr. Joe Williams went to his hut to ascertain the cause of his absence. At the hut Williams ascertained that Vinson had not been home the night previous Williams then returned to the reef, taking a different route to that he went by and found Vinson lying on his back dead, quite calm looking, and had apparently died without a struggle. Further evidence showed that after the Institute was closed the previous evening Vinson proceeded to Goodge's hotel, and had two or three glasses of whiskey but was quite sober, and left the hotel shortly after 11 o'clock p.m. apparently in perfect good health and proceeded to his home. From that time nothing was seen until midday on Thursday: From the evidence of Dr. Plews a verdict of died from valvular disease of the heart was recorded.[5]
