History[edit | edit source]

In November 1882 the Ballarat Star reported on the hotel's new name:

Ballarat is generally to the fore in recognising merit when recognition is due. The latest illustration of this is found in the fact that an hotel on the Plank road which has been recently renovated outside and inside, has been re-named the Baron Wolseley hotel.[2]

In June 1887 the publican applied to transfer the license:

An application was made yesterday to the Licensing Court by Annie M’Shane, licensee of the Baron Wolseley hotel, Main road, for the removal of the license of that house to a house at the corner of Durham and Main streets. Mr Gaunt appeared on behalf of Messrs Joseph Armstrong, John Splatt, Soo Chong Kee, and other ratepayers, and objected to the removal of the license. In connection with the application the licensee of the hotel was proceeded against for allowing her premises to become dilapidated, but it appeared that the notice served on her gave her until the 30th August to put the place in repair. Both the charge and the application for removal were withdrawn.[3]

In September 1887 the publican again applied to transfer the license to another building. This was refused, and her license was cancelled:

Annie M‘Shane, licensee of the Baron Wolseley hotel, applied for the removal of her license to other and more commodious premises. The licensing inspector, Mr Parkinson, also proceeded against the applicant for allowing her premises to become dilapidated. The application for removal of the license was refused, and the inspector’s proceedings withdrawn. An order was made by the court to allow her to surrender her license within seven days, endorsed without any compensation.[4]
