The Belfast Hotel was in Ballarat, Victoria, <1862-1864>.

Site[edit | edit source]

In 1862 the address was given as Wendouree Parade.[1] In 1863, the address of the hotel was given as "the swamp", meaning Lake Wendouree.[2] Hargreaves identifies the site as being on the corner of Forest Street and Howitt Street.[3]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel had been known as the Nag's Head before 1862.[3]

In July 1864, the publican, William Cron, wrote a letter to the Ballarat Star objecting to have to travel to Learmonth to pay his license fees:

THE GRIEVANCES OF A PUBLICAN. SIR- I have now spent two days in search of my license, and find after it was granted to me that I have to go to Lake Learmonth which to pay for the same which place is fourteen miles, and the roads as you are no doubt aware in a fearful state. I should like to know why one class of community are so oppressed in paying away their money. Surely if there is a collector for the same why not let him call for the several amounts or appoint a day for receiving the same at Ballarat. I should like to know how long are we to be so taxed in paying our £25 per annum. After all my trouble there is no protection, for a customer or stranger may come in and have his drinks and need not pay for them if he does not feel disposed to do so. Although we are 16,000 miles from civilization we expect to get a little fair play. Yours, &c., WILLIAM CRON, Belfast Hotel, 1st July.[4]
