The Belle Vue Hotel was a hotel in Ballarat, Victoria, <1873-1912>.

The hotel was in Peel Street north.[1] The 1912 Australian Electoral Roll gives the address as 164 Peel Street[2], near the corner with Gregory Street.[3]

Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

In March 1911 the Licenses Reduction Board held a hearing into the hotel:

BELLE VUE HOTEL. With regard to the Belle Vue hotel, Peel street (owners, Coghlan and Tulloch), Senior-constahble Magor said the place was a weatherboard single story building, with eight well furnished rooms. It was 350 yards north of the Royal Oak, and half a mile east of the Globe hotel. He did not think the hotel was required. To Mr Pearson—If the Belle Vue were closed and the Royal Oak left a greater area would be left inconvenienced than of the Royal Oak were closed and the Belle Vue left. Senior-constable Wallace also gave evidence. George Tonnor, manager of John Heinz's slaughter yards, said the Belle Vue was more convenient for the men of his establishment than any other house in the locality. Chas. Todd, miner, gave evidence as to the convenience of the hotel. The board then adjourned till this morning.[4]

The hotel was demolished in 1917 to build a hall for the Black Hill Progress Association:

Although formed only a few months ago the Black Hill Progress Association has a membership of over 300, and already it has made a start to erect a building of its own. The old Belle View Hotel in Peel street north was purchased and pulled down, and by the formation of working bees a start was made to put up a hall for the Association's use.[5]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

  • In April 1875 the hotel was the venue into the death of John Thomas of Nicholson Street. The boy died from swollen glands in his neck, after unsuccessful treatment with Chinese herbal medicine.[6]

The People[edit | edit source]

Belle Vue Hotel, J. A. Gidlow to Elizabeth Gidlow; ...in the case of the Belle Vue Hotel, Mrs Gidlow stated that her husband was leaving the state for 12 months and that during that period she would be assisted by her father.[11]
  • Gidlow was still listed as publican in 1912.[2]
