History[edit | edit source]

In June 1863 the publican's license for the Farmers' Hotel in Market Square was granted to Benjamin Hall.[1] In April 1864 he was granted temporary leave from the hotel.[2] The license was renewed in July 1864.[3] In October 1865 he transferred the license to Samuel Wicks.[4]

In January 1866 Hall applied for the license for a new hotel, to be called the Bull and Mouth Hotel in Doveton Street, Ballarat. The license application included:

To the Bench of Magistrates at Ballarat West. BENJAMIN HALL, publican, now residing at Armstrong street, Ballarat, do hereby give notice that it is my intention to apply to the justices sitting at tho Court of Petty Sessions to be holden at Ballarat West on the eighth day of February, for a certificate authorising the issue of a publican's license for a house situated in Doveton street, Ballarat. The house contains bar, two sitting rooms and eight bed rooms. It is a new house built by myself for my own occupation and is to be known by the sign of the Bull and Mouth Hotel, the twenty-fourth day of January, 1866. BENJAMIN HALL.[5]

Hall's license was renewed in December 1873 and 1875.[6][7]
