Background[edit | edit source]
History[edit | edit source]
The early history of the brewery was reported in the Star in 1889:
In 1859 the long since vanished Black Eagle brewery in Ascot Street was started by W. and J. Martin, the firm changing to J. Martin and Brooking, then to J. Martin and W. Robertson, who failed, and W. Watson and Thorn succeeded. Then Watson carried on alone, benevolently backed a big bill for a friend, and was compelled to sell out, Upton becoming the owner, and with him the line closed.[1]
