History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was described as a disorderly house in June 1858:

Peter de Loree, Blue Jacket Hotel. Mr Foster said the house was a most disorderly one, and the applicant must be cautions in future. Granted, with a caution.[3]

In February 1862 an advertisement mentioned the hotel:

LOST Bank of Victoria Deposit Receipt for £67. Payment stopped. Whoever will bring the same to John Farrar, Blue Jacket Hotel, will be rewarded.[4]

In October 1878 the hotel was one of several burgled:

A little batch of burglaries were committed in Ballarat East on Thursday night...During the evening Mr James Noonan, of the Blue Jacket hotel, Main street, caught a boy making off with the contents, about 9s, of his till. He managed to secure the young thief, and took him towards the lock-up, but at Barkly street the captive twisted himself free and made his escape. The offenders were visitors from Melbourne, attracted hereby the Miners’ Races, and unwilling to leave Ballarat without making a haul of some kind.[1]
