History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was offered for sale in July 1871:

WEDNESDAY, 6th JULY. SALE BY AUCTION OF THE WELL-KNOWN BREWERS' ARMS HOTEL AND FREEHOLD, Creswick Road, next Messrs Murton and Leggo's Brewery. BY ORDER OF MORTGAGEE. JAMES ODDIE and Co, are instructed by the mortgagee to sell by auction, on Wednesday, 6th instant, at One o'clock, on the ground, The BREWERS' ARMS HOTEL, Creswick road, near the Hay Market. All that piece or parcel of Land, situate, lying, and being in the parish of Ballarat, in the county of Grenville, being part of Government allotment number eighteen, bounded on the east by a Government read 3 chains wide, bearing west 50 feet 4 inches; on the north by a private road bearing west 53 feet; on the west by a line bearing south 45 feet 10 inches, more or less; and on the south by a line at right angles with the last line bearing east 74 feet 7 inches, little more or less.[2]

In December 1877 the police objected to the renewal of James Thompson's license on the grounds that the hotel was dilapidated and badly furnished. The case was adjourned for two weeks.[3]

It was one of the 26 hotels closed in 1892 in Ballarat as part of the changes to licensing laws.[4] The owners were paid £701 compensation for the closure of the business.[4]
