There was also a Bridge Inn at Bungaree <1874>. Could this be the same.?

History[edit | edit source]

In October 1896, the sister of the publican fell into the well and was drowned:

SAD DROWNING CASE. BALLARAT, Sunday. A sad drowning case occurred on Saturday at the Bridge Hotel, Bungaree, the victim being Annie Marie Ryan, aged 20, a sister of the licensee. Miss Ryan was last seen by her sister at 11 o'clock, when she went to draw water from a well about 12ft deep, a few yards from the house. Half an hour later her absence was noticed, and her bonnet was found floating on the water. Apparently she had fallen in while trying to recover the bucket by means of a pole. An inquest was held by Mr Leader, P.M., on Sunday, and a verdict of accidental death was returned.[3]

On 22 March 1915, the hotel was included on a list of hotels to be deprived of their licenses. This list was complied by the Licenses Reduction Board in Melbourne. Licensing district hearings for hotels on this list were to be held at the Ballarat Supreme Court on 11 May.[1]

In January 1926 the publican was fined for breaches of the Licensing Act:

In the Bungaree Police Court on Wednesday Licensing-inspector Lovett charged George Wagstaff licensee of the Bridge Hotel with having had the bar door open on November 28 and with having sold liquor in prohibited hours. Fines of £5 and £2 were imposed. One man who was found on the premises in prohibited hours was fined 10/. Similar fines were imposed on four men in respect to a similar charge relating to November 24 and one man who had given a wrong name was fined 10/.[4]
