History[edit | edit source]

In July 1863 there was an application for a hotel license:

An application for a publican's license by James Rowett, Happy Valley, for the Britannia Hotel, was called, but there being no appearance of applicant, the Court was then adjourned.[2]

Rowett must have eventually got the license, because in July 1864 he was charged for not showing a light:

Police v James Rowett, not keeping a lamp burning over his door (the Happy Valley Hotel); fined 1s and 5s costs[1]
