The British North American Hotel was in Ballarat East, Victoria, <1862-1864>. Sometimes called the British North America Hotel and the British American Hotel.

The British North American Hotel was in Esmond Street, Ballarat.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In May 1864, an advertisement in the Ballarat Star asked for tenders for painting and wall papering the hotel.[2]

In June 1864 Franklin Collins advertised his intention to apply for the license:

TO the Bench of Magistrates at Ballarat East - I, FRANKLIN COLLINS, Miner, now residing at Esmond street, in the District of Ballarat East, do hereby give notice of my intention to apply to the justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at the Police Court, Ballarat East, on the 1st day of July, 1864, for a Certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License for a house situated in Esmond street, Ballarat East, and known by the sign of British North American Hotel, containing two sitting-rooms, four bedrooms, kitchen, exclusive of those used for family, of which I am owner. Dated at Ballarat, this 16th day of June, 1864. FRANKLIN COLLINS.[3]

The People[edit | edit source]

  • In June 1862 George Anderson applied to the Licensing Court to be publican. The application was opposed by the police and the hearing was postponed.[1] Member of the Licensed Victuallers' Association in August 1862.[4]
  • In June 1863 the publican was Charles Critchley.[5]
  • In July 1864 the license was granted to Franklin Collins.[6]
