The Bull and Mouth Hotel was a hotel in Blackwood, Victoria, <1856-1879>.

Site[edit | edit source]

The hotel was in Blackwood[1], at Golden Point.[2]

Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel was not listed at the 1880 Licensing Court hearings.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

In July 1857 the hotel was the venue for a meeting of miners unhappy with the new Land Bill and Goldfields Management Bill before the Victorian Parliament. They felt it still gave too many rights to squatters, restricted mining access, and did not provide them "...with prompt, cheap and local justice."[4] They passed five resolutions, one of which was to form a delegation to Melbourne to present their arguments to the Victorian Land League and present a petition to Parliament.

In June 1864 the hotel was described as having three sitting rooms and six bedrooms.[5]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

  • In September 1856, Mr. Wilkie, a candidate for the seat of Bourke, held a political meeting in the ballroom of the hotel.[6]
