On Boxing Day, 1872, the hotel publican hosted an sporting event:

BOXING-DAY AT BULLDOG. The annual sports given by Mr John Russell, of the Bulldog hotel, Bulldog, took place on Boxing day. The weather was all that could be desired. There was a better attendance than on any previous occasion, and all seemed to have enjoyed a pleasant day.[2]
