Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was one of 23 hotels reviewed by the License Deprivation Board in Ballarat in 1922.[3]

The lease of the hotel was offered for sale in February 2019 for $750,000.[4]

In December 1984 the hotel applied for a license to trade on a Sunday.[5]

The hotel lease was sold in October 2010:

THE Bunch of Grapes Hotel - reputed as Australia's cheapest pub - has sold. It was confirmed yesterday that the leasehold of the Pleasant Street hotel sold for the asking price of $50,000, plus another $22,000 for existing stock...For their $50,000 outlay, the new leaseholders get the opportunity to operate the hotel and bistro on a 29-year lease, a four or five bedroom, self-contained unit and a drive-through bottleshop.[6]

The hotel was closed for renovations in 2011. Only the façade of the 1906 building and two chimneys were retained, the rest of the building being demolished and rebuilt. The million dollar rebuild took nine months and included a new bar, dining area, children’s room and coffee lounge. The hotel reopened in September 2011.[7]
