History[edit | edit source]
In April 1869 John Griffiths advertised his intention to transfer the license to Fanny White, from the Retreat Hotel in Peel Street:
NOTICE of INTENTION to APPLY for TRANSFER of LICENSE from one PERSON to ANOTHER —I, JOHN GRIFFITHS, of Ballarat East, Licensed Publican, the holder of a Publican's License for the house and premises known as the Bush Inn, situate at Main road, Ballarat East, do hereby give NOTICE that it is my intention to apply to the Justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at the Police-court, Ballarat East, on the fifth day of May, 1869, to TRANSFER the said License to FANNY WHITE, of Ballarat East, Hotelkeeper. JOHN GRIFFITHS. Given under my hand this twenty-first day of April, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine.[2]
There were two hotels with the name along this road, this one close to Ballarat, and the other at Mount Clear. A fire was reported in April 1890 which appears to be this hotel, as the Mount Clear building had burned down the previous year.
BALLARAT. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) TUESDAY EVENING. A wooden house on the Buninyong-road, formerly known as the Telegraph Hotel, but which has latterly been unoccupied, was totally destroyed by fire last night. The hotel was one of the few remaining landmarks of the very early coaching and gold digging days.[3]
