History[edit | edit source]

In May 1867 Eugene Sullivan advertised he was applying for the license:

LICENSE.—To the Bench of Magistrates at Ballarat East—I, EUGENE O'SULLIVAN now residing at Ballarat, in the Colony of Victoria, do hereby give notice that it is my intention to apply to the Justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at Ballarat East, on the twenty-seventh day of May, 1867, for a certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License, for a house situated at Peel street, Ballarat East, known as the Bute Hotel, and now occupied by Eliza Williams. The Hotel contains, bar, two parlors, four bedrooms, kitchen and out houses. The thirteenth day of May, a.d., 1867. EUGENE O'Sullivan. G. W. F. PATTERSON, C.P.S. Court-House, Ballarat East, 14th May, 1867.[2]

In January 1869 the publican William Rainke asked for a water trough to be placed outside the hotel.[3]

The license was reviewed by the Licensing Court in June 1888:

Bute hotel— George Heinz, licensee; Herman Sass, owner. A wooden building, six rooms lath and plastered; chiefly a bar business; three-stall stable attached; close to the cricket ground...George Heinz, licensee of the Bute hotel, said he was in a thickly populated place, and did a good busi ness, which was paying him well.[4]

It was one of the 40 hotels closed in 1891 in Ballarat East as part of the changes to licensing laws.[5], The owners were paid £1064 compensation for the closure of the business.[5]

In January 1893 it was reported that the building was now being altered to suit a general store.[6]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

  • In February 1869, W. H. Thompson used the hotel for a political meeting:

Mr W. H. Thompson- addressed meetings of rate payers of Ballarat East on Wednesday evening in the Black Hill, Peel street, and Humffray street neighborhoods. At the Lancashire Arms, Black Hill, there was a large attendance, but at the later meetings at the Bute hotel, Peel street, and the Red Bull hotel, Humffray street, the meetings were smaller, the thunderstorm having no doubt prevented many persons from leaving their homes[7]
