C. C. Chibnall was a publican in Ballarat, <1868-1873>.
History[edit | edit source]
Chibnall held the license for the Foresters' Arms in Sebastopol. He was granted the license in July 1868.[1]
A daughter was born at the hotel in February 1869:
CHIBNALL.—On the 21st February, at Chibnall's Foresters' Arms, Sebastopol, Mrs C. C. Chibnall, of a daughter, both doing well.[2]
On 11 July 1873, Chibnall and his wife were away visiting friends, leaving the hotel (and the children) in the care of her father. The hotel was destroyed by a fire at about 1.00am:
"... Mr and Mrs Chibnall were from home, on a visit to some friends at Carngham. The fire was first seen by a Mr Watson, living in the neighborhood, who gave the alarm to the inmates. The City men were at work from half-past one until about four o'clock, before the fire was thoroughly got under. Several narrow escapes occurred to the firemen, through the falling of two of the chimneys, occasioned by the strong wind blowing at the time but fortunately no one was hurt. Only a few articles of furniture were saved. Mr Turner, father-in-law of Mr Chibnall, states that when he went to bed he thought he extinguished the fire in the parlor. The cause of the fire is not yet known.[3]
