The Canadian Hotel was in Plank Road, Ballarat.[1]

In June 1857 the license application was postponed for one week to give the new publican a chance to comply with the regulations:
Mr Randall supported the application. Inspector Taylor objected, as the last time he visited the house, it was dirty and its accommodation inadequate. There were only two little parlors under the stairs, and attic sleeping places approachable only through a hole in the wall about half the size of a newspaper. There were no stables either. Mr Randall said the applicant was only just entering on the property, and Mr Taylor had only seen the house under La Rue's keeping. Mr Taylor concurred. Postponed till Monday.[2]
The hotel, and the Boundary Store, were offered for sale in December 1858, and January 1859[3]:
To Speculators and Others, FOR SALE, THE CANADIAN HOTEL and BOUNDARY STORE, together with all the buildings connected therewith, situated on the Plank Road. No reasonable offer refused. For further particulars apply to M'NAUGHT, BOYD & CO., Market square, Ballarat.[4]
There was an attempt tp break into the hotel in November 1859:
On Wednesday morning a party of two men tried to effect an entrance into the Canadian Hotel, on the Plank Road. A butcher who resides next door heard the movements of the rascals and got out of bed, when they took to flight. They had a dog with them, and on reaching the Main road they were joined by a third man, who acted as a sort of sentry whilst the others were trying to force an entrance into the premises. There can be no doubt but this is the same gang who attempted to enter the house of Mr Rowe, on, the previous night in the same locality.[5]

- Before June 1857 the publican was ___ La Rue[2]
- In June 1857 the license application by new publican David Nicol was postponed for one week.[2]
- In June 1858, the applicant, James Gladden, failed to appear at the licensing court and the hearing was postponed for one week.[6]
- Gladden failed to appear at the second hearing and the application was postponed until 1 July.[7]
- In June 1860, 1861 and 1862 the publican was William Robertson.[8][9][1]
