History[edit | edit source]

The company was reported on in June 1865:

The Cape Clear Company resumed sinking on Tuesday.(27 June 1865)[2]
The Cape Clear Company's shaft has been standing since bottom was touched in the S.W. corner, owing to the breaking of a clack in the lift, to repair which the whole column was lifted on account of the rapid rise of the water. The force of water is very great, employing 12 inch pumps, 6½ feet stroke, 12 strokes per minute. They started pumping on Monday evening, and commenced to sink again on Tuesday. It is intended to go down 30 feet deeper, the supposed dip in the shaft being 3 feet, but so heavy is the water that the true character of the washdirt scarcely ascertained; the manager, however reports that about four feet of paying stuff was sunk through, and eight or nine specks could be seen on trial with the shovel, but all the clay was so quickly washed away by the force of the water as to show only sand, floating reef intermixed with quartz veins and drift timber. The men in the shaft work only three hour shifts. Two puddling machines fire going up, and the sluices are finished. Two more puddling machines will be erected at a future time. Mr Boardman, the manager, attended in Ballarat on Tuesday, to issue scrip to the shareholders.[1]

In August 1867:

The Cape Clear Company is pumping away at present, and it is expected that by the middle of the week the water will be down to the cap-piece.[3]
