The hotel was built in 1863, at the same time as gold mining began in the area.[2]
The hotel was offered for sale in December 1914:
Cape Clear Hotel To Be Sold. On Monday next Dalgety and Co. will submit by public auction, as a going concern, the well known old-established hotel at Cape Clear, to wind up the estate of the late Mr J. A. Mactaggart. Over 20 acres of land are attached to the hotel. The hotel contains 21 rooms, stabling, etc., and is prominently situated on the main Ballarat road, at the junction of the Cressy, Lismore, Rokewood, and Linton roads, and is the principal commercial and accommodation house for a large district. The sale is timed to start at 3 o'clock.[3]
The hotel closed after 2017. The building was offered for sale in July 2023 at a cost of approx. $1,000,000.The hotel freehold was offered for sale in July 2023.[4]

The People[edit | edit source]
- In December 1871, the publican, W. W. Rumble, had his license renewed.[6]
- It was renewed again in December 1872.[7]
- From at least December 1873 to December 1876 the publican was Samuel Pollard.[8][9][10]
- From at least December 1879 to his death in September 1914, the publican was John Mactaggart.[1][11][12]
- In September 1933 the license was transferred from J. Moynihan to Mary Ann Moynihan.[13]
