Site[edit | edit source]

The Carngham Hotel was in Carngham.[1] In 1871 this was described as being in the old township.[2]

Background[edit | edit source]

Built by Thomas East Fletcher.

History[edit | edit source]

The hotel was offered for lease in September, 1868.[1]

In October it was reported that the publican had left the hotel without permission of the Licensing Court:

Constable Dunne v J. S. Read, landlord of the Carngham hotel, for permitting his business as a licensed publican to be carried on by an agent for a longer period than twenty-eight days without the consent of justices of the peace. Constable Menagh intimated that the defendant, who had absconded, had not yet been apprehended, and that Mrs Read, who had carried on the hotel business for the past month with the permission of the bench, had conducted everything very strictly; the bench postponed the case for another month, so as to afford the police an opportunity of having the defendant arrested in the interim.[3]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

  • In 1861 the hotel was the venue for meetings of the Carngham District Roads Board.[4]

Inquests[edit | edit source]

  • September 1875 into the death of Thomas Marsh, a young lad found dead on the road after being crushed by his wagon.[5]

Mining[edit | edit source]

  • Ryan's Freehold Company, Mortchup, 23 January 1891, half-yearly general meeting.[6]

Politics[edit | edit source]

The People[edit | edit source]

A publican's license for the Carngham hotel, Carngham old township, was granted to Mr Henry Sheward. This license was granted under the old act, as the application, only for an oversight, would have been heard on the 27th December. Mr Stoker appeared for Mr Sheward.[2]
