Catherine McClelland was a publican in Ballarat and Ballan, Victoria, <1896>.

History[edit | edit source]

Catherine was born in 1852, at Buninyong, the daughter of George Innes and Catherine Quilty.[1]

On 6 October 1872, she married an Irish farm laborer, Robert McClelland in Ballarat, Victoria. They were living at Mount Buninyong at the time of their marriage. Both were children of farmers.[2]

In 1874, Robert McClelland took over the license of the Corn Exchange Hotel from Henry R. Kitchen.[3] In August 1875 he transferred the license to Conrad Tenbrink.[4]

In July 1896 the license of the Orwell Hotel in Ballan was transferred to her.[5]

In January 1897, her son Henry was in trouble:

AT the local Police Court on Wednesday, before Mr. M. Walsh and Dr. Salter, J's.P., two boys named Harold Wilkes and Henry M'Clelland were charged by Senior Constable Arnold with setting fire to a grass paddock, the property of Mr. J. G. Cousens. As the boys could not be induced to plead, Senior Constable Arnold proved the case. After receiving a severe lecture they were fined £1 each, which was paid by their parents.[6]

Catherine died on 11 November 1917 at Ballan:

We regret to record the death of Mrs McClelland, wife of Mr Robert McClelland, which took place on Sunday last. The deceased was 68 years of ago, and at one time was licensee of the Victoria hotel and the Orwell hotel, since delicenscd. For some years she resided in the Yaloak Vale and Beremboke districts, but latterly had resided in Ballan. She leaves a family of four sons and two daughters. General sympathy is expressed with the bereaved relatives. The funeral took place on Monday, the interment being in the Ballan new cemetery. The Rev. E. J. Welch conducted service at the grave the coffin bearers being Messrs M. O'Hehir, J. Kennedy, W. Williams, Les. Anderson, J. Heath, and Jas. H. Walsh. The mortuary arrangements were carried out by Messrs H. Evans and Son, of Egerton and Ballarat East.[7]

Robert died at the age of 76 years in 1918 in Ballan[8]: [9]
