The hotel was opened about 1864 as the Cattle Yards Inn, by William Brazenor. The two names were still used interchangeably in 1882 and 1883.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In December 1925 the publican was fined:

As the result of a police visit to the Cattle Yards Inn, Alfredton, on Sunday morning, 13th December, Eunice Letch, licensee was fined £2 for failing to have the lodgers' book properly entered up. Two men found on the premises were fined 20/ each.[2]

In June 1936 the publican was fined:

Eunice Petch, licensee of the Cattle Yards Hotel, was fined £5 in respect of an unfastened bar door, and £1 for allowing persons on the premises on Sunday, 17th May. Two men were each fined 30/.[3]

Petch was the victim of a fraud in February 1934:

George McKay Morant pleaded guilty in the City Court to-day to four charges of having obtained money under false pretences. It was alleged that in December Morant falsely represented himself to be authorised to collect orders for the Elec-clock Company for electric signs with clocks bearing the words "Time for a Capstan" and that he obtained £1 from William McKenzie storekeeper of Sturt street £1/10 from Walter Frederick Ham, plumber, of Humffray street, 10/ from Eunice Petch licensee of Cattle Yards Hotel and 5s from George McKenna, storekeeper, of Humffray street. Witnesses stated that Morant offered the clocks at the rate of £1 for five years and collected a deposit on behalf of the Elec-clock Company stating that he could do it so cheaply because the Capstan cigarette people were putting £6,000 or £8,000 into such signs Standish Keon, advertising supervisor for W. D. and H. O. Wills Ltd. said that Morant was not known to the firm and had no authority to solicit orders nor to use the Time for a Capstan slogan nor had the firm any knowledge of any such firm as the Elec-clock Co.[4]
