Charles Knight arrived at Lal Lal during construction of the Geelong-Ballarat railway. At the completion of these works he began to make bricks, and he and his wife also conducted an hotel and store.[1]

Knight established a brickworks using Lal Lal clay in 1862.[2][3] The Lal Lal School is made from brick made by Charles Knight.[4]
