The hotel was one of two offered for sale in December 1871:

GOOD INVESTMENT. To Hotelkeepers, Speculators, and Others, FREEHOLD FOR SALE. No. 1 and part of No. 2, allotment A. section 11, parish of Scarsdale, township of Scarsdale, county of Grenville, with buildings erected thereon, well known as the Freemasons' (late Union) Hotel ; corner allotment to the main Hamilton road. Also, Nos. 8 and 9a, allotment A, section II, with all buildings thereon, better known as Farroll's Club Hotel. The above bring for positive sale, is really a good investment. Immediate possession given. Titles— Crown Grants. Liberal Terms. Apply W. Hawkridge, City Tea Company Armstrong street, Ballarat.[2]

The hotel was destroyed by fire in September 1879:

Smythesdale, 16th September. At two o'clock this morning Gargan's Club Hotel, Scarsdale, took fire. A strong wind was blowing, and the building was soon consumed. It was insured for £200 in the City and National offices. An inquiry will probably be held.[3]
