History[edit | edit source]

In June 1858, two young women took action against the publican for trying to get them to work as prostitutes:

Anne McNamara and Anne O'Keefe v Charles Albert - Mr Cuthbert for plaintiffs. Mr Dunne for defendant. This was a suit for hire and damages sustained from breach of contract. Mr Cuthbert stated that his clients had been engaged by the landlord of the Clunes Hotel as waitresses, but when the plaintiffs got to their destination, they found that the house was an improper one, and they were required for an improper purpose, whereupon plaintiffs refused to act in any other capacity than that for which they had been engaged. Plaintiff O'Keefe deposed - Was engaged by defendant on the 17th May as waitress for the Clunes Hotel. At this stage it turned out that the contract was with one Hanson, whose power to act as defendant's agent was not proved. Mr Humffray of the Labor Mart was called, and he said Mr Akrens had acted in the business. The case as against the defendant thus fell through, and was dismissed.[2]
