In December 1871 a man was assaulted outside the hotel:

A brutal and cowardly assault was committed by two men at present unknown upon a man named George Keneally, at the Consols hotel, Smythesdale road, on the evening of Monday last. Keneally was at a ball, and was asked by one of the men to go across the road to speak with him. He went, and when at the place appointed was set upon and much cut about the head and face. He was received at the district hospital early on Tuesday morning. The men who committed the assault have not yet been arrested.[3]

It was one of the 26 hotels closed in 1892 in Ballarat as part of the changes to licensing laws.[4] The owners were paid £1245 compensation for the closure of the business.[4] It was owned in 1892 by James Coghlan.[2]
