Inquests[edit | edit source]

  • In July 1862 the hotel was the venue for an inquest into the death of Thomas Birch, of Burnbank Street, aged two, who died after he was scalded in a kitchen accident.[3]
  • In May 1863 the hotel was the venue for an inquest into the death of Miriam Marshall of Ballarat, aged four months, who died after her parents used herbal treatments recommended in a book by American Dr. Coffin, instead of seeking medical advice.[4]

The People[edit | edit source]

"Margaret Maule, Cornubian Hotel, Creswick road. Inspector Kabat pointed out to the Bench that the applicant had been convicted of sly grog selling. Mr Holmes for the applicant said that such was not the case; certain liquors bad been seized upon her premises and confiscated; that was not a criminal conviction. Inspector Kabat acknowledged the distinction to be drawn. The Police Magistrate concurred with Mr Holmes, and the Bench granted the license to the applicant."[1]
