History[edit | edit source]

The hotel freehold was offered for sale in April 1873, with the l;ease held by A. H. Bartlett.[1]

From a newspaper promotion in September 1905:

Hager's Criterion hotel, Doveton-street, Ballarat, has very comfortable quarters for visitors, and the livery stable attached is one of the best in the city.[2]

In March 1911 the hotel's license was reviewed by the Licenses Reduction Board:

CRITERION HOTEL. With regard to the Criterion hotel, Doveton street (owner, Mrs Hager; licensee, Mr C. Hager), Senior-constable Patterson described the place as a splendidly kept hotel, and in good order. The hotel was well furnished, and there were eight public bedrooms The Saleyards hotel was next door. The licensee of the Criterion appeared to have a good country connection, and he got a good share of the market trade on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This hotel was patronised more than the Saleyards and the Royal Standard, and in his opinion, it should be the last of the three to go. Constable Hayes said that both the Criterion and the Saleyards were well patronised on market days.

The licensee explained that the rent was £4 a week. His trade had improved since the establishment of a motor garage opposite, and he had a sound country connection, apart from the Rokewood coach-line, of which his hotel was the terminus. Evidence as to the popularity, and convenience of the hotel was given by Cr A. Wade, of Bungaree Council; Cr Kerr, of the Buninyong Council; Mr. E. Hale, secretary of the Buninyong Shire Council; and Messrs Jas. Lyons and Geo. Tonner. The board reserved its decision in each case.

To-day the board will deal with the Bull and Mouth, Corner, and North Briton hotels.[3]

The publican was fined in June 1919:

In the city court on Tuesday Michael Harrington, licensee of the Criterion Hotel, was fined £5 on a charge of having had his bar door open during prohibited hours. Three men found in the hotel without lawful excuse were each fined 10/.[4]

In February 1926 the publican, William Joseph O'Halloran was fined for opening outside of licensing hours.[5]
