History[edit | edit source]

Gilmore took over the license of the Maryville Hotel in Wallace from Richard Stephen Frawley in November 1932.[1] It would appear that he rename the hotel as the Wallace Hotel.

In July 1934 he was involved in a serious collision in Sturt Street, Ballarat:

Remarkable Escapes in Collision. BALLARAT, Friday. - Two cars were wrecked and three persons had remarkable escapes from injury in a collision at the intersection of Sturt and Ripon streets about midnight on Thursday. One car driven by Thomas Charles Treloar, of Fraser street, was forced over the gutter and smashed down a wall of the tram shelter. The other car, driven by Darron Gilmore, of the Wallace Hotel, Wallace, overturned and slid for several feet on the hood, with the wheels spinning in the air. Gilmore and his passenger and Treloar escaped with slight abrasions and cuts.[2]

Three years later, Gilmore was again in a serious motor accident:

Glaring Head-light Menace. GORDON, Sunday— Due to dazzling headlights of an approaching motor car on the Western Highway. Darron Gilmore, 44 years, licensee of the Wallace Hotel, near Gordon, drove his motor car into a truck loaded with potatoes on Friday night. He received cuts, severe shock, and abrasions, and was removed to hospital. The car was severely damaged.[3]

In August 1949 he transferred the license of the Wallace Hotel to Mary A. Williams, on behalf of herself and William N. Williams, trading.as M. A. and W. N. Williams.[4]
