Symons died in Clunes in December 1888:

The funeral of the late Mr J. Davies Symons took place yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended. The deceased gentleman had long been a sufferer from pulmonary complaint, which eventually carried him off at the age of 55 years. For many years past he had been the landlord of the Cattle Market hotel, and was a Clunes resident of 30 years’ standing. He leaves a widow and six children to mourn their loss.[1]
