Background[edit | edit source]

The hotel was one of six in the Clunes district closed by the License Reduction Board in 1916.[2] The owners received £275 compensation.[3]

History[edit | edit source]

In April 1883 the publican, John T. Roberts, was one of several in Clunes charged with selling adulterated liquor:

Cases directed against publicans for selling bad liquor will be heard at the Clunes Police Court today. Mr Spence, landlord of the Buck's Head hotel, will be charged with keeping JDKZ gin, having a mixture of bad liquor with it; and a similar case against John T. Roberts, of the Duke of Edinburgh hotel, will be tried. Daniel Downey, of the Bellevue hotel, will answer a charge of mixing brandy and whisky, labelled Hennessy’s brandy. It is said that this “brandy” was submitted to experts in Melbourne, and they could not at first determine what spirit it was. Mr Bruce, an expert, will give evidence at Clunes.[4]
