History[edit | edit source]

In April 1864 the hotel was advertising for a respectable young lady to work as a bar maid.[2]

In June 1864 the publican, Thomas Cornwall, advertised his intention to apply for a renewal of his license:

TO the Bench of Magistrates, Ballarat East.-I, THOS. CORNWALL, Publican, now residing in the Main street, Ballarat East, do hereby give notice, that it is my intention to apply to the justices sitting at the Court of Petty Sessions, to be holden at Ballarat East on the 1st day of July, 1864, for a Certificate authorising the issue of a Publican's License for a house situate in the Main street, Ballarat East, and known by the sign of the Duke of Wellington Hotel, containing one bar, two sitting rooms, 5 bedrooms, &c. Dated at Ballarat, 16th June, 1864. THOMAS CORNWALL.[3]
