The Dunmow Flitch Hotel was in Plank Road, Ballarat[1], which is now known as Main Road.

Background[edit | edit source]

The name was often shortened to Dunmow Flitch

History[edit | edit source]

In January 1868 the hotel offering good wages for a respectable girl to work as a general servant.[2]

The hotel was offered for sale in February 1869:

THURSDAY, 4th MARCH FOR POSITIVE SALE BY AUCTION. THE DUNMOW FLITCH HOTEL. MESSRS M'DOWALL, GRAY, and WILSON have received instruction from Messrs Hamilton and Crawford, produce merchants, grocers, and hotelkeepers, Main road, to sell the whole of their property by auction on Thursday, the 4th March. The above sale has been determined on in consequence of a dissolution of partnership which must take place at an early date. This is a rare opportunity to anyone desirous of entering business. The premises are centrally situated, and doing good profitable business.[3]

The People[edit | edit source]

  • In July 1858 James Wilks applied for the license but did not turn up for the court hearing. His application was postponed for 24 hours.[4]
    • His license was renewed in July 1859.[5]
    • In May 1860 his license application was postponed for one week.[6]
  • From 1860-1862 the publican was John Hamilton.[7][8][1]
