Eliza Hargreaves was a publican in Ballarat, 1889-1892.

History[edit | edit source]

Eliza was born about 1838, the daughter of John Gordon and Margaret Briens.[1]

Eliza was married to Robert Hargreaves in Victoria in 1859.[2] Robert was the owner of a small four roomed hotel on the Creswick Road, Ballarat, called the Borough Boundary Hotel since June 1864.

In June 1889, Robert Hargreaves was "obliged to leave the district", and the license was transferred to his wife.[3][4] She had little or no money to run the business, so was financially assisted by Joseph Henry Leggo, the brewer, who had been supplying the hotel since 1873.[3] Eliza had the title transferred to her on 5 May 1892.

The hotel was delicensed, one of the 26 hotels closed in 1892 in Ballarat as part of the changes to licensing laws.[5] She was paid £650 compensation for the closure of the business.

At the time of her death on 2 August 1893, the furniture and fittings were valued at £50, she had about £50 in cash, and her jewellery was valued at £8.[3] The property was sold for £150.[3]
