History[edit | edit source]

Elizabeth Fitzpatrick Betts was born in London, England, to John and Mary Betts, and baptized at St. Andrew, Holborn, on 28 July 1830.[1] She married a butcher, William Thomas Boxall, at St. Leonards, Shoreditch, London on 11 November 1849.[2][3] They emigrated form London, arriving in Melbourne in the Sir Henry Hardinge on 9 July 1853.[4]

Thomas worked as butcher in Ballarat, and eventually became the publican of the Waverley Hotel in Sturt Street.[5] After his death in 1881, Elizabeth took over the license[6], however she soon sold the licence but retained ownership of the hotel. It was one of the 26 hotels closed in 1892 in Ballarat as part of the changes to licensing laws.[7][8] Elizabeth was paid £1040 compensation for the closure of the business.[7] She then took over the license of the Central Hotel in Sturt Street.[9]

Elizabeth died on 7 March 1900[9] at the Central Hotel:

BALLARAT, Wednesday. Mrs. Elizabeth Boxall, proprietress of the Central Hotel, Sturt-street, was this morning, found dead, in a sitting posture, on the floor of her bedroom. Last Monday evening she accidentally set fire to the sleeve of her dress, and was badly burned. She had been under surgical treatment, but, owing to her advanced age, she made but little progress. Death was caused by shock to the system.[10]

She is buried in the Ballarat New Cemetery, Church of England C, Section 03, Grave 01.[11] She did not leave a will, and her estate, of £380 17s 2d, was to be passed onto her nephew, but his name and whereabouts were unknown.[9]
