History[edit | edit source]

Merry was born in Scarsdale, Victoria, in 1886, the son of Charles Merry and Elizabeth Turner.[1]

In 1912 Merry was working as a tobacconist in Sebastopol, and living in Albert Street.[2] From about 1916 to 1934, Merry is living at the Stork Hotel in Armstrong Street and still working as a tobacconist.[3]

Merry took over the license of the North Star Hotel in Lydiard Street from Charles Hager in 1937.[4]

In March 1937 two men were charged with fraud after trying to pass a fake cheque for £350 with Merry's name and signature.

Two men, George Bell, of Albert Park, Insurance agent, and Dick Munro, of Carlton, a sailor, appeared in the City Court on charges of forgery, uttering and conspiracy. It was alleged the signatures of leading insurance officials had been forged in attempts to defraud city banks.[5]

By 1942 Merry had moved from the hotel and was living at 332 Ligar Street Ballarat, where his occupation was given as agent.[6]

Merry died in Ballarat March 1976 and was buried in the Ballarat New Cemetery:Lawn section D, Row: 14, Grave:-3.[7]
