Background[edit | edit source]

It was named for the publican, Joshua Evans.

History[edit | edit source]

In June 1888 the Licensing Court held a hearing into the hotel:

Evans’ hotel—Joshua Evans, licensee and owner. A one-storied wooden building, nearly new, lath and plastered throughout; contained eight rooms; well furnished, clean, and well conducted. Principal business a bar trade among the residents of the locality; a few boarders kept...John Evans, licensee and owner of Evans' hotel, said he had been in the house for 21 years. It was opposite the baths, and in a semi-suburban part of the town. Thomas Costin, collector, gave evidence in support.[2]

It was one of the 40 hotels closed in 1891 in Ballarat East as part of the changes to licensing laws.[3]. The owners were paid £921 compensation for the closure of the business.[3]

In January 1893 it was reported that the building was now unoccupied.[4]

Community Involvement[edit | edit source]

The People[edit | edit source]

  • The initial licensee was Joshua Evans in October 1867. [5]
    • He still held the license in December 1873.[6]
    • In December 1874, the police objected to the renewal of his license on the grounds that there was insufficient accommodation. Evans proved he did have enough, and the license was granted.[7]
    • Evans was still the licensee in June 1888.
    • In October 1891, Evans applied to transfer the license to a Mr Kavanagh, but the application was withdrawn.[8]
